In 1967 John DeLorean
abandoned the concept car “Banshee” and created the Firebird.
With his styling
touches and the powerful high performance 400ci engine option,
the debut was a
sensation. Pontiac
ignited the industry and the muscle car wars
were officially on. The 400 V8 was
considered intermediate size, neither a true small block
or big block, it was a
unique design, distinct from all GM engines. Essentially a
bored-out 389 in
1967 it was the only engine installed in ‘67-‘69 Pontiac GTOs
and was also the
biggest engine available in ‘67-‘69 Firebirds. Massive torque at
low rpm made
it an awesome street machine. The 400 V8
reigned from 1967-1979.
